Understanding FedEx Pricing: Dimensional Weight Matters
One of the most common surprises in shipping costs is "Dimensional Weight" (DIM Weight). FedEx charges based on the space a package takes up, not just its actual weight. The calculator above determines the DIM weight by multiplying Length x Width x Height (in inches) and dividing by the FedEx divisor factor (currently 139 for domestic shipments).
FedEx compares the Actual Weight to the Dimensional Weight and uses the higher of the two as the "Billable Weight" to calculate your final rate. If you ship a large, lightweight box containing pillows, you will likely be charged based on its size (DIM weight), not its actual light weight.
How Service Types Affect Cost
The speed of delivery is the second major factor in pricing. FedEx Ground is generally the most economical option for non-urgent shipments, especially heavier ones. Express services like 2Day or Priority Overnight utilize air transport, significantly increasing the cost multiplier, as reflected in the estimates provided by this tool.
